Fake Snow

Spring may be here but it doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun in the snow! In this science experiment, explore with various household ingredients until you’ve crafted the perfect snow recipe.

Supplies:

  1. Baking Soda
  2. Shaving Cream
  3. Hair Conditioner
  4. Cornstarch
  5. Water

Steps:

For these recipes, you can use as little or as much of the ingredients as you prefer – this is an experiment, after all! The key is to add the second item in small amounts and SLOWLY until you reach the right consistency.

1: Baking Soda and Shaving Cream

Mix together baking soda and shaving cream, slowly adding the shaving cream in small amounts until you reach the right consistency. Knead to combine

2: Baking Soda and Water

Mix together baking soda and a small amount of water, adding more bit by bit. Use a fork or whisk to stir together until it’s light and powdery.

3: Baking Soda and Conditioner

Start with conditioner (be sure to use white conditioner so it looks authentic!) and add baking soda, stirring with a fork. This is a great recipe for snowballs!

4. Shaving Cream and Cornstarch:

Mix equal parts of foam shaving cream and cornstarch until you have a foamy, light snow.

5. Now that you’re a snow-making expert, what other ingredients do you think would work to make snow?

With your grown-up’s permission, experiment with different ingredients to create even more cool, foamy, and fluffy snow!

Be sure to ask your grown-up to SHARE your perfected recipe on social media and tag us @RASatHome!
